Identity Crisis

Relocating to Karachi at the turn of the millennium, my work became a testimony to the altering ideological landscape.

Images of architecture from secular more peaceful times were coupled with the ever present Arab headscarf dotting the metropolis, to serve as a base for works which were sometimes embroidered on as a fitting antidote to turbulent times.

I have employed a variety of widely accepted icons such as the ancient Jewish motif of the Kabballah, or the flower of Saint Mary (native to the Middle East) or images of flowers like the Bougainvillea and the Gulmohar that are found in abundance in Karachi to address multiple hybrid religious and cultural traditions and attitudes,

Through these works I also delve deeper into my own identity in order to come up with answers regarding ancestry and parentage and how these play a significant role in bridging gaps created through political boundaries
